Controlled Burn is a Mount Zavain side quest in Diablo Immortal. It triggers by talking to Szandra whenever she appears in the Misty Valley, near the path that leads to the northwest of the Razed Village.

Objectives

• Escort Szandra to the Altar.
  (A novice monk is making a pilgrimage to pledge herself to one of the gods of the Sahptev faith. Find the altar she seeks.)
• Ignite the Altar (0/1).
  (Light the offering in the altar so that Szandra can complete her pilgrimage.)
• Talk to Szandra.
  (Szandra's offering was devoured in unnatural flame. Talk with her to understand what happened.)
• Follow Szandra.
  (Szandra wants to seek another altar to complete her pilgrimage. Escort her, but be on your guard.)
• Ignite the Altar (0/1).
  (Szandra's chosen altar is in sight. Help her by igniting the offering.)
• Defeat the Phantoms (0/8).
  (Accusing phantoms leapt from Szandra's offering. Stop them before the forest burns.)
• Follow Szandra.
  (Szandra has fled the haunting words of the phantoms. Follow her.)
• Talk to Szandra.
  (Szandra's explanation is long overdue — talk to her and uncover the truth.)
• Defeat Szandra's Darkness (0/1).
  (The anguished darkness within Szandra has emerged at the site of what would have been her final offering. Help her put it to rest.)
• Talk to Szandra.
  (Szandra has survived her pilgrimage. Talk to her to see what she's learned.)

Transcript

• Szandra: Blessings to you, traveler. I'm Szandra. May I ask your help?
  My mentor sent me here, of all places, to pledge myself to one of the gods. Says I need to focus my training. But he won't go with me, or tell me which god to choose.
  This forest has always been... strange. Dangerous. Will you accompany me as I visit the altars, please?

Start following Szandra in her search of an Altar

• Szandra: It should be quick. Most of the altars are close.

At the Altar

• Szandra: Guess it's time. Would you... mind igniting the offering in the altar for me?

Ignite the Altar

• Szandra: It's consecrated to one of the gods of chaos. We can skip this one. The gods of order suit me better.

The Altar alights with unnatural flames

• Szandra: (backs away) Oh, no. It's completely consumed...

• Class: What's happening?
• Szandra: I don't know... I didn't mean...

Szandra steels herself and continues her journey in search of another Altar. Follow her

• Szandra I have to get this over with.

At the next Altar

• Szandra: Phew...

Szandra makes her offering to the Altar. Ignite the Altar

• Szandra: I sense the blessings of the gods of order. This must be it!

Szandra finishes making her offering, then kneels down in supplication in front of the Altar

• Szandra: Gods of order, reveal yourself. Guide me to protect the loyal.

The Altar alights with unnatural flames

• Szandra: (backs away) No!

• 'Phantom#1: You are no protector.
• Phantom#2: The fire's everywhere!
• Phantom#3: Help us, please! Help!
• Phantom#4: You are a slayer.

Stop the Phantoms before they can harm Szandra and burn the forest

• Phantom#1: Will you close your eyes again?
• Phantom#2: To burn is your birthright.
• Phantom#3: You would fail your compatriots and disregard a sacrifice?
• Phantom#4: For you, there is no escape.

After defeating the Phantoms

• Szandra: Stop your gibbering!

Szandra flees. Follow her.
She stops at a destroyed altar

• Szandra: Hmmm... symbols of Ytar, the fire god. Good this one got destroyed at least. Let's go.

The Altar lights aflame

• Szandra: (backs away) No! No! Not again!

• Class: Szandra... you can speak the truth. Explain yourself.
• Szandra: The last time came through this valley, we were caught in a blaze. I was escorting travelers, and trees were burning and falling everywhere. They got pinned.
  They yelled for me, but I... I knew I couldn't do anything for them. I didn't even stop to try. I got out.
  I told my mentor, and he said, "perhaps it was your calling to leave them." Why would he say that? What they must have felt... it's horrible.

Szandra grabs her head in distress. A dark haze surrounds her

• Szandra: No one will tell me what to do. All they do is judge.
  I am not a killer. I'm not.

Defeat the shadow

• Szandra: No matter where I go, the fire follows.
  You can't... frighten me... with myself.

After the shadow is defeated

• Szandra: It's done. (stands up)

The flames go out

• Szandra: Thank you have been carrying... a lot.
• Class: The forest draws out the darkness in all of us, it seems. If you cannot accept yourself, your pain will grow.
• Szandra: I understand. The fire was his sign, his hand reaching out.
  I was chosen in flame. Ytar and I are bound together.
• Class: We deny the gods at our peril. This I know. Now you know it too.
• Szandra: All I know is that Ytar is mine. Nothing I do will change that.
  (to herself) One foot in front of the other. Steady. From here on.
