Normal Gems are a type of gem that can be socketed into gear in Diablo Immortal. The other type is Legendary Gems. Non-legendary gems may also be called "normal" in Diablo III but they are often simply called "gems".
Gameplay
Normal gems are typically used on secondary gear (especially Set Items). Each item can have up to 3 sockets with one of three colors: red, yellow and blue. Each color has two corresponding gem types, and each gem type boosts a particular stat:
- Ruby (red): Life
- Tourmaline (red): Damage
- Citrine (yellow): Potency
- Topaz (yellow): Resistance
- Sapphire (blue): Armor Penetration
- Aquamarine (blue): Armor
Normal gems can be bound or unbound. Their stack size is 9,999.
Normal Gems have an attribute called Refinement that increases the base attribute of the equipment slot the Normal Gem is socketed into. The increase from Refinement is a fixed percentage based on the rank of the Normal Gem and scales at a fixed percentage as the Normal Gem increases in rank, up to a maximum of Rank 10. Normal Gems of all colors provide the same increase at their respective rank.
Sources
- Weekly events: random types, up to 63 bound and 63 unbound per week combined across the events
- Daily events: random types, up to 12 unbound per day. Any gems not obtained by the end of the day can still be obtained on later days, but they will be bound, and there is a cap of 36 total gems per day including the unbound ones. Information about the cap and a gem counter can be found in the Codex, the info popup on the Battleground entry screen, or opening the buff menu, which displays the counter under the Gem Finder buff.
- Party Gem Find - active in a full (4-person) party, applies to overworld farming, Terror Rifts, dungeons and Accursed Towers purification
- Battleground, Chaos and Tower per-match reward
- Hilts - choice of type, up to 10 bound per week for 200 each, sometimes an extra one or two is on sale in the limited-time offers section
- Battle Pass
Upgrading
Normal gems can be upgraded at the Apprentice Jeweler. Each upgrade requires 3 gems of the previous level, and upgrading from grade 5 onwards also requires Echo Crystals.
- 5->6: 1 crystals
- 6->7: 5 crystals
- 7->8: 15 crystals
- 8->9: 35 crystals
If the player does not have enough gems to upgrade a Normal Gem, they can access the Market directly from the gem upgrade screen to purchase more gems.
Splitting
Normal Gems can be split at the Master Jeweler. This returns all materials used for the last rank, including Echo Crystals. The resulting gems will be bound. The feature can be used 3 times per week.
History
The Refinement attribute was added in the February 22, 2023 update.
Gem splitting was added in the March 6, 2024 update. The original intention was that the bracelet slots were recently added, and players with high-level gems couldn't take advantage of the new gem slots on these items as it takes a lot of gems to reach the same rank. Splitting allows immediately filling in the new slots without losing out on the stat boosts from the gems.
The ability to earn missed gems from Gem Finder on a later day and the gem counter were added in the December 13, 2024 update, although parts of the changes were not announced.
In the January 8, 2025 update, the Gem Finder buff was moved to the first position and its description was changed to include the gem counter, avoiding the need to click the details button (however, the details popup still disappears if the buffs change). This change was not announced.
In the September 25, 2025 update, a Codex entry with gem counter was added for Party Gem Find, and the Abyssal Verge/Erebban entries got their gem counters.
In the January 21, 2026 update, the stack size of Normal Gems was increased from 999 to 9,999.
The ability to purchase gems from the market on the upgrade screen was added in the March 19, 2026 update.
