Atma is a tavern keeper of Lut Gholein.

Atma has dark hair. She is a strong-willed, beautiful woman,^[1] and many men are aware of it.^[2]

Biography

Atma ran the only tavern^[1] inside Lut Gholein. Over the years, she developed an understand with Elzix. He would send travelers to her for drink and entertainment (often trading their wares for lodging), and she'd send them back to him for a soft bed.

Atma had a son. When he was ill, Lysander provided her with medicine.^[2]

Secret of the Vizjerei

In 1264, Lut Gholein found itself in dire straits, as the surrounding desert became unsafe. The reduction in travelers harmed Atma's business, but she'd saved a "nest egg" and was therefore able to support herself.^[2] However, her son and husband were both killed by Radament.^[3] The emotional wounds were deep and became distracted, her mind always seemingly elsewhere.^[1] Fara feared that she would succumb to her despair and hatred because of her loss.^[2]

Atma asked a group of heroes to descend into the sewers to slay the creature. In this, they succeeded. She took some solace in knowing that her son and husband had been avenged, and in thanks, talked to Lut Gholein's townspeople. The merchants agreed to give the heroes discounts on their wares and services.^[3]

The heroes were able to put a rest to the evil that had plagued the desert, to which Atma gave her thanks.^[4]

Atma remained in Lut Gholein while the city endured demonic occupation. She resided in the city's common ward.^[5]

In-game

Diablo II

Atma is an NPC in Lut Gholein, in Act II of Diablo II. She initiates the Radament's Lair quest and also rewards the hero with shop discounts after the mummy has been slain. Atma can be found at the Tavern, and can heal and rejuvenate the player. Every now and then, she bursts into tears and cries hysterically for a few seconds, presumably over her husband and son. She recovers quickly, strangely enough, and wipes her face with her sleeve.

Atma will appear as an NPC in Diablo Immortal. She will be found in the common ward of Lut Gholein.^[5]

Trivia

• Atma's name is possibly derived from the Sanskrit word आत्मन् (ātman) or आत्मा (ātmā) meaning the spirit or soul.
• Atma is the only Diablo II town NPC who does not have an introduction except Halbu and Jamella, who don't talk to the player casually. When she is first talked to, she directly starts the dialog for Radament's Lair.
• Atma has two unique items to her name, Atma's Scarab, an Amulet, and Atma's Wail, an Embossed Plate.
